In all likelihood, living inside a city is likely to mean that you do not have enough land to farm to produce for your family.
Farming in urban areas can be achieved at least on a subsistence level if not better.
Modern hydroponic methods likely would make urban subsistence farming possible in an apartment.
"Waste not want not" is going to be a heavy creed to make urban subsistence farming possible.
Compost! Compost COMPOST!
The more nutrients you recycle back into your systems the less you have to acquire elsewhere.
Yes compost can even be used for hydroponics, aeroponics, etc.
Simply make compost tea with cheesecloth or the like.
Compost does not have to smell, do it properly and you won't even catch a waft (warning: lots of people neglect compost).
Compost recipes are available online to assist one with urban subsistence farming.

Subsistence Urban Agriculture
Upon delving into subsistence farming and the urban endeavors of such one will often find themselves researching those stricken by poverty. It is no coincidence as such practices and ideals are considered to have come prior to any kind of major monetary system and agricultural produce was likely one of the earliest forms of currency. As a traded commodity, agriculture was able to bring to life the vast economies of the world today. To start without money one must subsist off the land, this is possible even in cities if resources are properly utilized. Hunger will surely be a thing of the dark ages if the knowledge and ideas of subsistence are spread around the globe, to the individuals whom need it most. One must seek harmony with the circle of life to find harmony in oneself, all "waste" must not be wasted but recycled and composted, products with which this is not possible must be considered obsolete in this thriving new era of ecological technology that seeks a balance with nature and the individual and thus a balance between that which is and humanity.

Urban Subsistence Farming
I'm researching options available to "live off the land" in an urban setting. Including energy production for household needs as well as food production. Self sustenance, independent of fossil fuels, that is what I am researching the possibily of and here I will post my findings. Please contribute any ideas!
